We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Shaun and the team at SLa for their impeccable work transforming our humble home. From the moment we met Shaun we were impressed with his vision and honest surmisal of what could be achieved with our site and budget. Where other designers spoke of endless rooms and multiple storeys, Shaun spoke of bespoke finishes, light-filled spaces, efficient design, and maintaining the character and history of the house, all of which was far more in keeping with what we had in mind for our long-term sentimental family home. Shaun’s philosophy combined with his impressive portfolio and reputation for stress-free builds ultimately made the decision to engage SLa’s services an easy one for us.
We can honestly testify that with Shaun at the helm, the whole process from start to finish was a privilege and a pleasure to be a part of. We thoroughly enjoyed witnessing our home transpire from first drawings through to detailed design and actual build. We are deeply grateful for the talented team of architects, consultants and builders that Shaun gathered together and recommended for our project. The smooth building process was completely underpinned by the highly detailed drawings provided by SLa and the open lines of communication and fantastic rapport with our builders, Mitch and Matt, of M2 Construct.
We would particularly like to thank Shaun for the design of our home – it is truly inspired! We are so impressed with the way his design has addressed all of the issues of the existing house, including heat, airflow, light, storage and privacy, in an incredibly effective and coherent manner. We love the way Shaun has creatively allowed us to maximise the use of our living and outdoor areas whilst minimising the effects of the western sun as well as the destruction of the original house.
Furthermore, each and every space in our house has been put to good use. The soaring ceilings and open living spaces that flow seamlessly to outdoor entertaining areas ensure that the house feels a lot bigger than what it actually is. Our house is the antithesis of the typical modern McMansion but is far more sustainable, not to mention easier to clean and maintain! It is the perfect size for our small family yet able to entertain and accommodate a large number of guests due to the flexible and well-devised spaces.
We don’t know how Shaun manages to stay abreast of all of the many projects his firm is engaged in but somehow he does! Despite our project being one of Shaun’s smaller commissions Shaun still gave his attention to every email and every design decision. He genuinely seeks to achieve the best possible outcome for all of his clients. His easy-going and humble nature make him such a pleasure to work with.
We were also very privileged to have had Jen Negline’s input and guiding voice throughout the project. We would like to congratulate her on her amazing eye for detail and ability to envisage what will or won’t work in a space. The material palette and finishes selected for our home are integral to its success. We can see why Shaun often defers to her opinion!
Finally, we owe a huge debt of gratitude to Neva Wethereld for all of the late nights spent on the drawings of our house. Neva was amazingly efficient, always professional and so lovely to work with. All of our changes, questions and input were met with enthusiasm and consideration.
Whilst many well-intentioned friends questioned whether diverting funds towards an architect of Shaun’s calibre for a house of our modest size and budget would be money well spent, we haven’t regretted it for a moment. The result is a home where every square metre is well-used and well-loved, with a design that will suit us through all stages of life. Having lived here for close to a year our appreciation of the house has only grown. We could not be happier with the final outcome!
