This project explores the new life of Tavistock, a gorgeous, intact character home that has been carefully preserved and then shifted to accommodate a contemporary extension to the north. The primary experience of the home is the north-east courtyard, defined by the edge of the existing home, transparent edges of the new outdoor living and the swimming pool (which deals with the level change to accommodate a tennis court). The house balances the character of the local vernacular while embracing a “palm springs” living experience that is reflective of the client’s interest and utility of the home. A subtle palette of whites, blonde stones and oak timbers are juxtaposed against a strategic use of blacks and concrete to create a cool but bold feeling throughout the home.
