Traditional lands of the Gubbi Gubbi people
This seaside home enjoys an enviable position on Sunshine Beach, capturing panoramic views from Lion Rock to Mooloolaba, with a national park forming its tranquil foreground. Designed as a permanent residence for the owners, the house takes on the feel of a "penthouse apartment," while also accommodating family members on occasion. The layout reflects this dual purpose: the upper level is dedicated to primary living spaces for the owners, with a focus on the expansive views, while the lower level serves as a space for guests, children, and storage for the gear that reflects the clients' adventurous and active lifestyle.
The design turns its back to the western side and opens up its expansive, easterly edge to the water. An elevated, carefully curated concrete and planted fringe raises the occupants' eye level from the road to the water, offering both privacy and a sense of sanctuary. The material palette is relaxed yet refined, reflecting the clients’ personalities and resonating with the spirit of the coastal environment. Blonde timbers, sandy crazy paving, and soft green accents are a nod to the immediate surroundings, while black accents provide structure, framing the otherwise understated palette.
For us as a practice, this house is a triumph of architecture, placemaking, and home-making, as well as a celebration of friendship. The collaboration and joy experienced throughout the build are now manifested in the completed home, and this success is a credit to the clients, the builder (Novak), our team, and all those whose talents, hard work, and contributions have made this home what it is today.
