Arthur

Traditional lands of the Turrbal people

Arthur began life as a pre-1911 Queenslander well and truly in need of some love, while also requiring relevance in contemporary terms. The project benefited from a longer-than-normal construction program (with the clients as the builders), affording the time to explore and develop a strong, rich yet timeless design outcome.

The design resists the traditional approach of duplicating indoor and outdoor spaces; instead, it dissolves edges, integrates landscape, and employs materials that reinforce an indoor-outdoor, sub-tropical living experience. The finishes and detailing draw heavily on the clients’ clothing background and boutique design aspirations, resulting in an outcome that balances glamour and casualness in equal measure.

Micro-cements, warm oaks, slabs of travertine and exquisite décor complement the architectural approach, contributing to an overall outcome that reflects a modern Mediterranean flavour. The crowning jewel of the house is the roof terrace, overlooking the Calile Hotel and appropriately adorned with mature olive trees.
